Can anyone tell me about their life as an intern?

Mine was pretty great.

My first internship position was the role of a junior travel agent in a small private home based business called Latin American travel. The business organized tailor packages to South America and Chile.

My first day of work was scary but very exciting. I knew that it will take a while for me to get use to the way the system works. Being a travel agent is not the easiest position because you have to be familiar with a very complicated booking system. The system I worked on was Galileo. Galileo is an on-line reservation system where you can book real time flight and accommodation availabilities. Although the system was difficult to get use to – I could manage it it well with in a month after my training course.

My employer was very helpful and patient. I was very blessed to have her. My employer Liezl Neethling helped me through times where the pressure was suffocating me. She knew I was all new to this type of business environment and taught me how to manage my work.

I learned to be patient with myself, to be organized and manage my time.I was taught how to work systematically and accurate and include up to the finest detail.

By the end of my internship I was well equipped to enter the world of bigger travel agencies where you work with the whole world. Exciting! It was really worth my time and I gained valued experience!

• Do research on the company profile and know what it is all about. Know the mission statement – this will give you a clear picture of the companies goals. The more you know of the company the more insight you will have on important questions that you can ask during the interview.

• Be on time and know for whom you must ask. This will show a professional attitude.

• First Impression counts the most – your appearance and your confidence are vital ingredients to a successful interview. Remember that the interview is your opportunity to market yourself. Be yourself and be relaxed – stress in the inside can show on the outside!

• Prepare a portfolio with your Cv, cover letter, certificates, reference letters, drivers license and Identification document in it. This will show the interviewer that you are well prepared and organized.

• Focus on your skills and your achievements – tell the interviewer everything you have done and why your skills match the proposed position.

• Make sure that you understand the question asked – take a few seconds to think about it and answer it in detail. This way the interviewer will analyze your thought process and problem solving capabilities.

• The question about your strength and weaknesses always pops up! Focus on the positive! State a weakness in a positive manner for example: you are working on a specific weak area and that you have a plan to improve this weakness.

• Be relaxed and be yourself. This will create a positive atmosphere.

• When the interview is finished thank the interviewer in a polite way. Follow up with a letter the next day. If you don’t hear from the interviewer a follow up call is appropriate one week after the interview.
